- There was a tail wind. I'd have to check the weather records, but I believe there were 25-30 mph winds that day. I've played Desert Rose (Winterwood) and the hole myself. It's basically a flat hole that bends slightly to the right. Don't think there would've been any cart path back in the 70s. I think the cart path today is on the left of the hole and would be out of play of? any sort of drive like that.

How the hell does someone hit a 515 yard drive, without some kind of? special circumstances, like a tail wind and down hill or maybe a cart path, etc, it defies logic?

Sir Swingman. Thanks for putting this together. Dennis Hopper had just moved back to Hollywood from New Mexico and spent hours kicking junk and watching Mike teach. He didn't golf yet, but said that Mike was from another planet. He'd know. This was when Mike was 70...and he still looked to be in the prime? of life.

- Sorry, i don't have any averages. Dan Shauger or Mike Dunaway might know...they both? knew him since the 80s and Dan used to caddy for Mike. Bobby Wilson might know too - I think they were in the 350 club together.

This old boy was bad ass driver of the ball I can often hit the ball 300 yards? and see the setup in his take away that are similar in my swing.

- There are newspaper article clippings of him shooting in the 60s...although, apparently he wasn't a? very good putter. In fact, he bogeyed the par-4 where he hit the 515-yard drive. Phil Reed wrote a book about Austin that's on Amazon if you'd like to read about him.

I was reading a couple of? articles on Big Cat with reports of 200yd wedges,? and some real deep 400yd+ blasts....would've been good to see how him and Mike fared in their comparative primes....George Bayer of Australia too (hit one 540yd in Australia , he used to beat the? ball!

Thanks for sharing this? I use to practice at several of those courses and that range in Studio City. Mike was quite a guy. It was fun to see him at his home again.

I hope I'm? still hitting it 300+ when I'm 70. Those last couple of swings are unreal for someone of that age. When you've got the upper echelons of talent mentally and physically you've got something special

- Yeah, I wish I had video of him at that age. Although, he did hit his longest drive? when he was 64...so maybe that's the best period to watch his swing?
